Claude for Legal
A tiernew this weekAnthropic's legal layer for Claude — 12 practice-area plugins and 20+ MCP connectors that turn the chatbot into a domain-aware legal assistant for law firms and in-house teams.
Kai's verdict
Anthropic is making Claude the connective tissue of legal tech rather than just another chatbot — the breadth of integrations and practice-specific plugins is genuinely impressive for a v2 launch, but the lack of enterprise audit logs is a real blocker for compliance-sensitive firms right now. (Verdict pending Phi's full review.)
Strengths
- 12 practice-area plugins covering Commercial, Corporate, Employment, Privacy, IP, Litigation, AI Governance, and more — not just generic contract review
- 20+ MCP connectors into tools law firms already use: Westlaw, DocuSign, iManage, Everlaw, Relativity, Harvey, Box, and others
- Grounding architecture pulls from live verified sources (Westlaw, CourtListener) to reduce hallucinations in legal outputs
- Embeds across Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) as a single context-carrying agent
- Claude Opus 4.7 scored 90.9% on Harvey's BigLaw Bench — currently the top-scoring model on that benchmark
Weaknesses
- Anthropic's own docs warn against using Cowork for regulated workloads — no compliance API capture, audit logs, or data exports yet
- Not a standalone legal product; requires Claude subscription and meaningful setup/customization with your own playbooks
- Entering a crowded space where dedicated players (Harvey, Legora, CoCounsel) have deeper legal-specific guardrails and established firm relationships
Best for
Law firms, in-house legal teams, and solo practitioners already using Claude who want agentic legal workflows without paying for a separate legal AI platform.
